I have a hacked/jailbroken iphone, and wanted to know if I went abroad, maybe U.K., France or Brazil, if I pop in one of their local prepaid cellular simm cards, would I be able to use the phone on their networks? I am aware that I can use my iphone with an AT&T plan abroad, but the costs are prohibitive.

It has to be unlocked and properly hacktivated.

As long as it's a GSM sim card, it should work.

Can I unlock the phone myself, or is AT$T the only way I can get the phone unlocked.

AT&T will never unlock your phone ! Why would they, they are the only iPhone carrier in the US.

Use Google to search for unlock info for your model phone for whatever firmware and baseband you are on (Settings/General/About)

If you have a 3GS with baseband 5.11.xx, it cannot be unlocked.
