Can an iMac be used as a monitor for a Mac Mini?

I currently have an older(2009) Mac Mini and will be getting a new Mac soon. I'm thinking of getting an iMac but would still like to keep my Mac Mini close by.

Can I use the iMac as a monitor for the Mac Mini? This way I can switch between the 2 computers.

As I know the 2017 iMac doesn’t have target display mode.

They removed that functionality with the introduction of the first retina iMac. I'm hoping it comes back soon but I don't think so...

Depending on what you want to do on the Mini..."Screen Sharing" on the local network might be adequate.

I use an older 2011 Mini as a media server and whole-house time machine backup system. I run it without a monitor, and use Screen Sharing from any of my other Mac computers when I need to access it. You may need a simple "Display Emulator" plug to put the Mini video in a higher resolution mode without an attached monitor:
