I've just moved into a new place and other people's devices are showing up in my sound drop down. I tried connecting to one to see if it would ask for a password, but it did not. So now I'm wondering if I can see their stuff then they must see mine, so does that mean they can output my computer sound to their system :(

Those are AppleTV. Mac audio devices are not shared on the network.
Anyway, you should ask your neighbours to check their AppleTV settings.

OK thank, what should I ask them to check exactly? I don't have an appleTV so I don't know what the settings are. So I can see their appleTV's but they cannot see my Scarlet2i2 yes?
