I'd start by taking all the PCIe cards and all the hard drives out (except your boot drive) and test it. A long time ago, I had a problem that was blamed by all sorts of people on all sorts of things but turned out to be a ram socket that was not properly attached to the board so the esoteric is not impossible. I will be here until bedtime so let me know what happened after you took everything but your boot drive off. I don't know that I have the answer but worst case scenario, I can be a sounding board for you. Does anything stand out on the system report? Reset the PRAM once you have taken all the other things out and lets see what happens. I have seen machines that were so dirty that I've wondered why they did not burst into flames and the processors were ok even though the temperature must have been very near their max so in our machines with the exceptional ventilation they have (unless your fans are broken?) I don't imagine that processor overheat would result in a kernel panic as opposed to a self shutdown; I'd lean towards software rather than hardware at least at first. Given that the problem repeats over and over, have you considered a reinstall from web recovery? Bare bones machine plus fresh OS plus kernel panic... that's when it will really get interesting :)

to trouble shoot the problem installing an copy of OSX on to a small drive/partition (a usb stick will work or some spare space on an internal HD) and see if it still happens on a blank install.

you can also safe restart to see if something in the background is the problem (google drive was giving me problems at one point)

also noticed it only mentions 3 sticks of ram, i assume you have 4 sticks of ram so maybe one is bad/lose?
try something like pulling them all and re inserting them, if you still have the problem boot with only 2 sticks and swap them around to see if you still crash.

also like ramthessd says a pci card can be to blame

good luck

Hi Orph :) [puzzled] 4 sticks of ram? 3 sticks of 4gb for 12 gb total and given that it is a 2009 and they came with 2gb sticks, almost certainly aftermarket ram. I was hesitant to advice Zalam to work with the ram because he was concerned that the processors might have something wrong with them as well as my experience with the ram socket (good ram, securely seated, bad socket 1 messing everything else up). Testing them is totally a good idea and the machine should boot with one of those so he could use the POST test as a memory test for each stick... My thinking was that if it happened with nothing but a boot drive onboard then when the OS was replaced the kernel panic would hopefully not happen and putting back one thing at a time would yield useful log files. I just found out recently that the eSATA card that I once used constantly but had fallen into disuse (inertia kept it in there) was the cause of my USB ports shutting down whenever I plugged in a USB3 flash drive.

Since I have a small SSD dedicated to the OS, I tend to reinstall rather than dig around when something like what Zalam describes happens (bad habit left over from windows) but I think he should try your idea first (the safe mode restart) before the web or HD based recovery that I originally suggested as there would certainly be more information gleaned from that and maybe the answer to the problem.
