I want to move all my eMails - many years of them - out of google online storage and put them into some kind of archive program for the desktop.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Hopefully something on the less expensive side, although, like everyone else, I have thousands of eMails I need to archive.

Thanks for any feedback,

W

I have mainly used MailSteward and DEVONthink. Both give a browsable, searchable, independent database, which can be restored to Apple Mail if necessary.

I would suggest DEVONthink is the obvious choice if you are already a DEVONthink user, but probably not worth getting DT just for the mail archive. The user interface in DT is not very intuitive. It will archive Apple Mail and “old” Outlook but new UI Outlook. Not tried any other clients. It is not easy (need scripts) to setup a daily schedule.

MailSteward has (IMHO) a somewhat non intuitive interface but does the job. I think it only works on Apple Mail. It is easily scheduled. The UI is somewhat dated IMHO.

Mail Archiver X is worth a look. It preserves your mailbox structure (as does DT) and handles Outlook, not sure about other mail clients. It is easily scheduled.

oh thank you for the feedback!

I have used both of those programs.

I'm wondering which would be easier? It seems like moving eMails OUT of Gmail and into Devon might be complicated.

I also used a much earlier version of MAILSTEWARD, like 10-15 years ago. I would need to get a new version. But I do have most of my eMails from 2000-2010 already stored on an older computer ... so maybe I should look into that. (to be honest, I wasn't sure if they were still making MAILSTEWARD for the newer Mac OS's.)

thank you!

I have used DEVONthink with GMail. MailSteward works with Ventura. I think the maker keeps it up to date but hasn’t updated the UI. Current one probably same as 10-15 years ago!

Consider EagleFiler, though if you want access from iOS, it seems Deven Think is the only viable solution?
