Is there any way for them to do this without an official app store update?

I'm just curious because, well mainly because of Facebook, i noticed awhile ago i had a ton of problems with notifications not going away, or saying i had a notification when there was nothing new.

But since then its stopped and there has been no update via the app store.

Can developers push out quiet updates? or would this be something related to say the connection the app has to Facebook servers?

I know i've had other apps that did this where there was a problem that eventually stopped, but i most likely deleted them because i can't think of them off the top of my head.

EDIT: this would be another good thing to point out, that Facebook has done this to only a small percentage of users without them knowing it?

Facebook is mostly server based/databases, and so most of the stuff happens in their backend. That's how they can personalize the menus, etc. I'm pretty sure they had a hook in like a previous update that wasn't seeable, but was there to add this update.

Notifications are a server-side / iOS thing and don't really have much to do with the app itself.
