Can Apple TV 3 stream the sound of a video to an AirPlay speaker?

Hello,

I'm thinking of buying a projector and hooking it up to an Apple TV 3. The problem is the sound, I would like to avoid having to drag a wire from the ATV to a speaker.

Would it be possible of doing this if I used iTunes to stream the video through the ATV and selecting multiple speakers in the AirPlay options? I don't have the possibility of testing this myself.

I would assume you will be having more that one source feed content to the Projector, - like a blue ray player, cable tv box, etc. If that's the case, the best option would be to invest in a AVR ( audio video receiver) which will take all the sources in, and let you then output the desired source the projector via an HDMI cable - carrying both your video and sound information.

And in my my opinion, wires are your friends - they are more trouble free generally that managing lots of wireless options.

Airplay, as designed and implemented at the moment, is primarily an audio feature. The notable exceptions are Apple's movie playback app, Youtube, Sony's Crackle app, and a handful of others.

A perfect example of how this works 90% of the time would be the HBO Go app: Start a movie, and it plays back on your iPod, iPad, whatever, right? Hit the Airplay icon and it pops up your other Airplay-capable devices on your network, at which point you tap on it and it sends the audio, and only the audio, to the other device to playback.

However, you can't Airplay FROM the ATV2 to anything else. It's a one-way feature at the moment.

A friend had an ATV and an Airport Express both playing music at the same time, so it should be possible to Airplay the video via the ATV and the audio via an Airport Express. (I only have an ATV, so can't try this to confirm).

You might have issues ensuring the audio & video are perfectly in sync though.

No the ATVx, AirPort Express are AirPlay playback only. Your iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch & iTunes are AirPlay sources and can stream to a playback device.

Also it's optical out only on the ATV3 (aside from HDMI audio). You can get pretty long TOSLINK cables.

You can stream audio to multiple players in AirPlay. You cannot playback video on one device and sound on another though.

where would you expect the music to be coming from? if its from your iTunes then that works. it has to come from something. do you have a receiver for your speakers? thats where you plug the appletv into... everything else is wireless...
