can Apple TV play from multiple sources?

this may be a newb question, but can Apple TV play from multiple sources? I am thinking of getting a time capsule to store all my media on as a backup for everything but video. I would add music and photos from my iMac to the Apple TV via the sync but then play movies off the time capsule if this is possible?

Yes, I have all media on the TC, but you still have to have your iTunes open and running on the host computer. When you select sync from iTunes, uncheck the "Show only synced items on my Apple TV". I sync photos, but stream all media.
