can current at&t subscribers switch to an iphone plan?

if i'm in a family plan with someone, and we both are going to get iphones, can we just switch to an iphone family plan? if so, do we need to stop by an AT&T store to do this before activating our iphones?

for some reason the new iphone plan at $109.99 for 2 comes out to be cheaper than what we're paying now
