My granddaughter has an 8 Plus and as of 3 days ago, she can't make or receive calls. She can't send text messages. However, I can send her an imessage and we can facetime.

I had her shut down and re start her phone, check that the airplane mode was off, do not disturb off. She said that was the case. BUT the problem exists. I am a trying to figure this out myself. Perhaps she screwed her sim card, or it died. or some other setting. We both have Verizon and in the same city.

Any suggestions before I take her and her phone over to an authorized apple repair center?
Should the phone is caput, how is the Apple SE out now? If I am going to need to buy her a new phone, I don't want to spend a lot with it. She needs the phone to work .

Verizon says it sounds like the sim card. However, they are working on appointments still. So I tried to make one for this week and of course, they are too busy. this town has over 10 locations and they are busy.. how hard is it to replace a new sim card with the network and then give it a try. When I got my12 Pro took 10 minutes. Oh they said I could come to the store, but might have to wait outside if they are busy . Heck it is -15F out.

My inclination is to say F them and go to the apple store and just trade in her phone and buy her a 13 or 13 mini. I doubt she has upgraded her IOS on her 8 Plus . This way it has the latest IOS, works, and her grandpa is out some money but I can contact her and she has a communication source.

the only thing that has been a real pain in the rear with her , is that she doesn't always keep her phone charged up.

Getting her a new 13 or 13 mini will also get her a phone with two eSIMs, so a physical SIM card is not necessary (and can't go bad).

You're a good grandpa!

She is my only granddaughter, she is 21 and has been on her own a lot, so someone has to advocate for her. I have a story but this isn't the place for it. It makes sense, she will have 5G as well, and me? my mom said I often think with my heart rather than my head. At 74, I am too old to change.

we are still in a holding pattern, she fell , er ... fainted and hit her nose, tooth and cut above her eye, remembered nothing in the ambulance ride to the hospital. I took her to the dentist yesterday, her tooth is jammed somehow and has to go back Monday. I was going to take her to apple, but she was crying because it hurt. anyway, she said she got a whole slew of back text messages and then it stopped. I can see that if they are imessages, they some how got through, but still nothing else. She can text me, send me a picture, and I can do the same, but as far as a non-iphone message, nope. So Monday I think we need to see what Apple can do. I shouldl get her at 13 or 13 mini, pay it off. then she has the latest everything and should be good.
Oh well....

You can try resetting settings under “Settings” app, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset, Reset All Settings. This kind of sets up the phone anew (but keeps all non-settings data). Some things would have to be reconfigured, like WiFi networks or Bluetooth devices, etc. Also some apps might need relogging in, etc. The SIM card stays though and it can help with connectivity issues. It’s kind of a last ditch effort, then it’s complete reset (Same options but instead of Reset it’s the Erase All Content and Settings option).

Yikes! I hope she’s alright.

She should have gone to the dentist today, but didn't feel well, they will glue the tooth together and in six months have a crown put on. Phone, tomorrow we will go when the windchill is -27 rather than today when it is 34F. I am at home. Probably I will push her into an iPhone 13

Resolved, she has the 13. case closed. well, the store transferred all her settings over and she could send calls but not receive them. So I took it,her and me to the service center, the techie looked at the settings and finally removed the sim card and put it back and now it worked. He said sometimes it is the sim card not working and needs to be removed and put back. Now that she has the 13, I am wondering if I should have removed the card and put it back, however I shall never know as it is at Verizon's rebate dept where ever that might be. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhh
