One way is to use a file manager app like "Pathfinder" to change a file's (or folder's) attributes from visible to invisible.

Even though the file/folder will then be invisible in the finder, you'll still be able to see it and act upon it in Pathfinder...

Another idea might be to make an encrypted .dmg folder and give it some ubiquitous name. You do that from Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Create an encrypted disk image (.dmg) folder.

New Image+ >

- create a name
- pick a size (you can’t make it bigger once created - just make another one if needed)
- format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
- pick an encryption (128-bit AES encryption is probably sufficient)
- partitions: single partition - GUID partition map
- image format: read/write disk image

DO NOT save the password in your keychain!!!
