No sign of the RX 580's getting cheaper here and the availability is even worse, and I have an offer for a 1060 at a great price.

For reference - I'm using a 5,1 in Sierra, do some video/mograph work in OSX and other than that just want the card to game in Bootcamp.

There seems to be information that I can download the Pascal drivers and the card will work in OSX and in Windows - I can buy a windows card, not need to flash it and I'm good to go. I also read a few opinions that the 1060 has lots of issues in OSX and is gimped in both OSX and Bootcamp.

Could anyone provide a clearer answer for me? I appreciate there is a wealth of info out there but I'm lost in what is applicable to me. Again, some premiere pro/after effects but mostly bootcamp gaming.

Can I get any PC 1060 or is it only certain ones? I've read a few opinions that using a 6 to 8 pin cable to power the card is a bad idea for the system as a whole, but I don't really see another option with the MP?

Thank you in advance.

I'd very much recommend against it. See here:

Once Vega launches in numbers I'd expect the RX 580 to become more plentiful and consequently come down in price.
If you can wait a month or so then definitely do so.
A Sapphire RX 580 Pulse 8GB is the best card to go for as it is the one used in Apple's eGPU dev kit and has excellent support in Sierra and High Sierra.

Amazon UK's pre-order price isn't too bad at all...

The pre-order price here is 420 euros, with second hand ones going for 380 +. I've not seen any stores have them in stock and any preorder dates are constantly being pushed further and further.

I guess I don't see much resolution to the supply issue here and don't want to wait for another few months to have the same result. At some point the 'price' of second hand 580s dropped to around 300 but even then they are very scarce.

On a side note, I know the one you linked is the 'most supported' card, but if I were to get another 580 (the MSI Armor is pretty much the only one I see being sold second hand) would that run into trouble? I had no idea there was so much different between the manufacturers.

1060's can be found much cheaper! Go straight to EVGA's website and you can get one for as little as €314,99. Pretty sure if you shopped around you could find a better deal.

However, there are issues with the Nvidia drivers and the 1060. Bottom line is that when you wake the system from sleep it is slow to respond. Logging out and in again fixes it, just a question of whether or not you can tolerate it. I managed for about a month, then sold mine.

Where in Europe are you? I've ordered a Sapphire RX 580 Pulse 8GB recently. Although it's got a long delivery time the price was pretty reasonable (around €275)

Squiiid has convinced me, again, for a 580. I can get one second hand for around 310 euros, which is fine as I can collect this week. I'm only worried about whether or not an MSI Armor 580 will have any issues as it's not the sapphire one, and if the mac pro can indeed power the card properly - some things I'm reading seem to indicate that it's juuust on the edge and might damage my logic board.

Having said that, this thread seems to indicate I won't get much of an increase over my 680:

though I don't know if that is in OSX only. Not sure it is worth the 300 smacks if performance increase is minimal.

If you're in Europe just pre-order from Amazon UK. I'm in the UK and buy stuff from Amazon.fr, Amazon.de and Amazon.es all of the time. Yes, it may take a day or two extra to arrive but it's definitely worth shopping around between them and saving some money. Sometimes a considerable amount.

Exactly this happens on my GTX 1070 FE also. This issue is not just limited to the 1060.

Well I can get a MSI 580 for 300 euros. I'm not convinced it's worth the upgrade over the 680 anymore though.

I am pretty sure the card will perform roughly the same as the Sapphire PULSE, however, don't expect any big jump from 680. Both driver and software optimisation is not ready for that yet. The RX580 can run, may be little issue, but sure can't perform as expected in MacOS.

Thanks for your reply. Shame to hear that. I'm assuming in bootcamp/windows the RX 580 will be miles ahead of the 680 though?

Yep.
And remember it's a lot more futureproof having HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4
