iPad Can Gmail app on iPad use Device Contacts like on iPhone

In the Gmail app on my iPhone 11 Pro, I granted permission to use my iPhone's contacts. (I don't use Google contacts). When I start typing in the To: field, contacts from my iPhone appear from which I can choose. On my 2020 12.9" iPad Pro, the Gmail app never asked for permission to use the iPad's contacts, and no contacts from my iPad appear from which I can choose.

Does anyone have any suggestions to get this to work, or does it only work on iPhone? I've deleted the Gmail app, restated my iPad, and reinstalled the Gmail app to no avail.

Weeeeeell, this is super weird...

does the settings thing for gmail in the system settings look different on an iPhone? It doesn’t mention anything about contacts there on my iPad. I also can’t see any setting for contacts from within the Gmail program itself.

I’ve got all my contacts in Google anyway as my primary source for contacts so I can’t really test anything else.

a work around that might not be ideal might be to use Apple’s Mail program with your gmail account although actually you shouldn’t do that until the next update to iOS as there’s a couple of security vulnerabilities Apple hasn’t patched yet that are supposed to be fixed in 13.4.5 (if that’s still happening..I just read about 13.5, so anyway whatever the next update is after 13.4.1 is will hopefully fix Mail and in the mean time the security company that found them recommends using third party programs like Outlook or Gmail).

wow, that is super weird! I just double checked my privacy/contacts thing, and Gmail isn’t listed there either.

so I guess inexplicably Gmail running on an iPhone has that contact thing, and not on an iPad!? That sounds like a bug to me ?
