I have ordered a Gainward GTX 680 Phantom, but only after discovered it's 3 slots high. This means if it goes in slot 1, it will block slot 2. I would like to use this PCI-E SSD adaptor in my other 16x slot.

Can I put this GPU in slot 2, and use slot 1 for the adaptor, or is slot 1 needed for primary GPU?

You can use any PCIe card on slot-1.

Your GPU choice will bring you problems, it's so big that the card will block both slots 3 and 4 when installed on slot 2, you won't use a USB 3.0 card for example.

Thanks for the answer. I got a good price on the GPU, but didn't realise it was quite so big until after I ordered it. I still think it is the right choice, and SSD in slot 1 would fill all my needs.

a 2.5" SSD, a m.2 SATA SSD or single m.2 NVMe PCIe card can be used in all slots.
only a multiple m.2 NVMe PCIe card with PCI switch should be inserted in slot 2 or slot 1 for maximum performance.

note: slot 4 is the top and slot 1 at the bottom

So am I right to understand that I could put the GPU into slot 1 (at the bottom) and the PCI-E SSD adaptor into slot 4 (at the top) without performance penalty?

This Sedna card is PCIe 2.0 x1. Won't matter where you install it, all MP5,1 slots are at least PCIe 2.0 x4.
