I'm serving a small site from IIS on my WinXP notebook and would like to view the site in a browser from my OSX Powerbook. Both comouters are on the same LAN.

What URL should I try in to my OSX browser to view the site? When I use the IP the directory listing is denied, and I'm not sure what other path to try...

If you have properly configured IIS on the win machine and opened the firewall, the next most popular reasons would be that you don't have an Index.htm file in the root directory... or that your website is at some other directory location other than the root of the IIS structure.

Yeah, I had a similar problem with a similar setup at work and the root cause turned out to be the Windows Firewall blocking connections from computers that weren't on the same subnet.

Simply turning off the Windows Firewall for a test should demonstrate if this is the problem. If it is found to be the Windows Firewall then check out its settings to see when it refuses connection on port 80.
