Can I access files on old HD if I install MCE-SSD

If I install an MCE/SSD setup in the optical bay, what happens to my old hard drive in the hard drive bay? Can I boot from the SSD in the MCE/optical bay and use the old hard drive as a scratch disk in its current configuration? Or do I need to take additional measures such as reformatting the old drive?

As far as I know you need to put the SSD into to place of the old HDD and the HDD is to be put where the optical drive was, if you want to use the SSD as your boot drive (the one with Mac OS X on).

Exactly. With the OS X installed on the SSD, you just go to System Preferences -> Startup Disk and select whichever as a boot device.
