Hello all, have not posted a question here for a while, but it is too late to contact Apple directly, so here goes....
My Macbook Pro laptop has 5gb of iCloud storage that came free, and it is near full. I was thinking of purchasing more storage space, but I am unclear as to how to add a folder from my computer to this storage space honestly. Can this be done, or does iCloud only allow storage from specific places, and not accept individual folders of content??
I mean I know it is not an external drive, which I have, but how do you take advantage of increased storage in iCloud please??
Oh, and thanks in advance!!

I can see an "iCloud Drive" entry in the Favorites section of my Finder window, and it's full of folders, so it doesn't look as though that by itself would be an issue.
I don't run the free iCloud storage tier, but I have no reason to believe there are limitations to that one other than the skimpy 5 GB you're stuck with unless you pay for more.
Note, though, that not all applications necessarily know how to interact with your iCloud Drive.

To enable iCloud Drive on your Mac, goto System Preference > iCloud and see if iCloud Drive is checked.

Note: In the iCloud Drive options, you may choose to include Desktop & Documents folder (which is handy if you buy lots of storage, not so much on the lowest tiers).

When iCloud Drive is enabled in the System Preferences, you should see an iCloud Drive (top) folder in Finder, if you don't, go to the top menu > Go > iCloud Drive (or - in Finder - simply press shift-cmd-i).

My iCloud folder is full of folders and documents that I have just put there. I treat it just like a normal Finder folder. It fully works like this. I can see and open most files on both Mac OS and iOS without any difficulty.
