That's it really...
I bought it locked to carrier without a sim card or contract.
So I need to get to unlock without having to activate via iTunes to use my own carrier sim.

Can this be done?

Yup, the jailbreak happens when you put it into restore mode. Lack of activation wont stop you from doing it.

Cool, going for it now, will let you know how I get on.
Fingers crossed.

Worked. Brilliant. I now have an iPhone 3GS 32gb black jailbroken and unlocked and using a tesco mobile prepaid sim card :D

Now I have a question.

If I get a 3GS, can I JB and unlock it and stick my iphone 3G sim in it and have it working, or does the phone have to be officially activated by AT&T?

Or can I just run the jailbreak and have everything run smoothly?

I can only speak to my own experience, but I would say yes.
I jailbroke and unlocked my 3GS without a sim card inserted at all and prior to any activation.
I would just advise to make sure you are clear on the instructions and take it slowly.
Best of luck.
