I have been having startup issues for a while and have lots of help from this awesome forum.

I had decided to bite the bullit and replace the PSU (as it wont turn on) but I was horrified to find a USED one is around £200

I also see there are two models both reported to work for the 2008 macpro the 614 0409 and the 661-4677.

This gives me a few questions:

1) Are these the same?
2) I have the old power supply Could I take the connector of that and attach it to any normal 980W PSU and then find a way to suspend it in the case?
3) There are other Apple PSU's that are 980W but cheeper could I buy one of those and support it somehow?

Sorry to be such a cheepskate but I just shelled out £200 for a new graphics card and this could still turn out to be the Logic Board, PSU's, RAM ect, ect

Thanks for your time again and all the support

Unfortunately the power supply is one of the most important parts of an computer, although many people aren't aware of this. The absolute worse thing you could do is cheap out on a power supply, but of course, that is up to you. The thing people don't realize when they get into Mac Pro's is replacement parts are not cheap, its not like you can walk into a computer store and buy off the shelf parts, certainly you can to some degree, obviously hard drives, CPU's and to some degree memory, and fans, optical drives, but when it comes to things like power supplies, logic boards, drive sleds, your choices are not as plenty.

In answer to your queries:
1. I don't know if they are the same.
2. No
3. I don't think so.

1. specs and connectors-wise, yes, different manufacturers
2. different pinouts, you'll fry logic board
3. search, it's possible to find right one below 200 quid (I saw one for ~140 quid + shipping). There's an alternative, but I don't know these guys. Contact them maybe?

Thanks for all the replys (very quick :) )

Good to know I can get either model Thanks 666

Also nice heads up on frying the board there are a few posts of people soldering the wires to Apple connectors which sounds crazy!!!
I knew there must be a reason they didn't just use the old connector with the new PSU.

Well......

Guess I know what I want for christmas :)
