Can I buy an iMac now then months later trade in my laptop?

I'm wondering if this can be done. Can I buy an iMac then months later trade in my laptop towards the payment for the iMac or does it have to be done at check out?

You can do the trade ahead of time and receive Apple Store credit, and then use that credit towards an iMac. But you can't apply a trade-in toward a purchase you have already made.
