Can I buy an iPad in HK to use in the UK? Price comparisons below if interested

Hi guys

I am heading to Asia (HK and Singapore) from London in a couple of weeks. After some research, I think HK comes up trumps for the cheapest iPad.

Query 1: will I have any issues with downloading apps etc. from the UK Appstore when I come back from holiday? There are reports about people buying from the US having to register with iTunes US etc., does this apply for HK as well?

Query 2: Am hoping I can buy one of the 3G packs with Vodafone or O2 - I don't think the iPads are locked but just to check I can just buy the SIM with one of the UK telecom providers and use it?

Query 3: I don't think I will get Applecare and risk the 1 year warranty. Is this international or will I have to take it back to Apple HK if there are any issues? Will Apple UK help me if I have any problems with it?

Thanks for all the help in advance! For those interested, the price comparisons are below (I am interested in the 64GB 3GB version):

- £699 in UK
- HK$6,488 in HK (£540)
- S$1228 in Singapore (£590), although if you get back 7% Goods & Services Tax it will cost £548 so about the same as HK although it is still less hassle in HK as you don't have to reclaim your tax back - HK does not have sales taxes)
- US$829 (£540) plus taxes on top depending on which state

Sorry, one more question!

I heard that OS4 will not be launched for the iPad till this autumn...if I buy my iPad in October which is running OS3.2, can I upgrade the software to OS4 when it is launched? If so this will not affect my decision to buy now and I will just grab it in October.

1. No.
2. They are fully unlocked - any provider will work.
3. It is international. They have no problem servicing them in the UK.
4. iOS 4.2 is being released for iPad in November (skipping 4.0 and 4.1), and will be a free upgrade to all users, as will all future software updates. This is done through connecting to iTunes.

Are you sure about that?

It appears iPad owners will fall somewhere in the middle. iPad owners will receive the next major OS update (4.x in the case of new iPad owners) for free, but may have to pay for the next major upgrade (5.x)

am also doing the same thing as you, going to HK to buy my iPad since the prices are way more cheaper like you mentioned. :p
 
Don't forget though that if your purchase is over £390 you'll need to pay VAT and Import Tax on your return to the UK! That will add around £70 to the price!!
 
As of now, the iPad supplies in HK are still very tight. Most major retailers have very little or no stock. The smaller independent shops that have stock are jacking up the prices. The Apple HK online store still shows 7-10 business days until ship. So be forewarned otherwise you might be disappointed when you get here, unless the local inventory eased up significantly by then.
