Can I buy someones old broken iphone 3g and do the out of warranty purchase?

I was curious if I bought someones old iphone 3g 16gb that was broken could I take it into the apple store and trade it in for a brand new 199$ iphone 3g 16gb? Seems like buying a piece of crap one for 100$ is like a 200$ coupon in that case. Thanks for advice.

Well, I think the 16Gb one might be $299 not $199, but I'm not sure. You *should* be able to do that. I'm not 100% sure though.

You'd need the original receipt surely. And by that, not the ebay one if you bought it from there.
