Can I call AT&T to get credit checked before buying?

I want an iPhone but don't want to buy one only to find out that I need a deposit or something. Can I just call them? And if I do call them, could they give me a pre-approval code or something so I'm guaranteed?

Yeah, they can give you the code over the phone. They gave me one... I still havent activated my phone yet so dont know if it works.

I got my preapproval code over the phone. Just to warn you others have posted that even with preapproval they still had some issues. My experience went smoothly though.

Evidently they can give you an 8 digit code but not a 9 digit code which is required.

I'm still having them check my credit, rather know before buying than to incur a 10% restocking fee.
