iPod can i charge while outputting video to a tv simultaneously?

hi, i was wondering if i can charge my ipod(wire connect to usb) while outputting video to my tv?

i spoke to apple customer care and the person i spoke with said i can. however, i tried it before but the battery icon kept going lower and lower while watching videos and being plugged into my computer.

My guess would be playing video draws power from the battery faster than the battery recharges.

It worked with both a dock and the cable.
