Can I close an iOS app w/out having to first switch to another app, then double-clicking to see running apps, then holding one of them to switch to the "close app" mode?

Sometimes I would prefer to just close an app and not leave it running. Am I missing something obvious?

Used to be able to. By holding the home button it would completely close the app. I'm afraid there is no way anymore, as standard.

My response though, is another question: "Why do you feel that you have to do that?"

It will close if it needs to free-up some system resources. The iPhone very good at doing that and was designed that way. You don't need to obsess over whether or not something is running in the background. The system is designed to leave as many things running as possible with available resources so you have quicker access to frequently used apps.

If you haven't used something in a while and your iPhone needs more resources, rest assured the app will close.

Not out of any concern over resources, more of an OCD thing maybe. Would just like to be able to know I could, especially if it's an app that uses location services. ;-)

You could always turn off location services to that particular App when you are done using it.

Thats correct... for iPhones or an iPad 2. If you have an iPad 1 or an iPod touch, iOS runs sluggish as hell when RAM is really low. So i have to shut down all running apps on these devices to bring back the smoothness.

to kill an app and go to the home screen (and keep it in the multitasking bar) press the power button till you see the slide to power off, then hold the home button till it brings you to the home screen.

It's so simple.....not

oddly enough there are some apps that slipped thru the cracks that continue to run in the background that shouldn't! Rage is one of them! I played a short game of rage one day....turned it off and went about my day. My phone was getting really hot in my pocket and had drained about 30% in an hour. I killed the rage app and it went back to normal.

It shouldn't be able to do this...but it was.
