my hard drive that holds all my ATV and itunes content crashed today, i am not sure if i will be able to recover all the files. does anyone know if there is a program or way to copy the files that are on my ATV back to my computer?

thanks!

I am not sure what you mean by restore image. My :apple:TV is 1.1. There is a work around I refer to in my post for ssh/afp to work. Required a few command lines. Works great for me. I can ssh/afp anytime to my :apple:TV. software only hack.

if by restore image you mean that installed on the :apple:TV to restore your OS, I don't know why that would matter. The hack doesn't touch or use the restore image as far as I can tell. I could be wrong. My :apple:TV was pre 1.1 and upgraded to 1.1. I do not know if current :apple:TVs come with 1.1, restore image 1.1, or whether this makes a difference but worth considering before attempting, although if everything fails it can always be restored from image easily.

Your appleTV seems to have a restore image of 1.0, it has the AppleFileSharing program in it, which 1.1 would not. This is a pre-youtube image, but is much more easily hacked with the patchstick than the 1.1 versions. If you were to restore your AppleTV (hold menu and minus for 6 seconds), and select "Restore" when it gets to that menu I'm certain it would come up as a 1.0 restore.

P.S what Cohiba's are you into?

I will check after this movie ends. My :apple:TV was pre-Youtube when I purchased. I am not clear why the restore image matters and I see appletvhacks.net is down or I'd look it up to refresh my memory. afp did not work without several command lines to work around 1.1 though.

as far as Cohibas, I can't say that I've had a bad one (had better than Cohibas though). Robustos or Lanceros are excellent but the most amazing Cohiba IMO would be the Siglo IV. Personal choice.

EDIT: ah yes. here it is the work around. while ssh'd just copy/paste each line

Got it! In v.1.1 the AppleFileServer app is missing. To restore the app, use these commands and voila!, you can then activate using the sudo /usr/sbin/AppleFileServer command and afp into the apple tv. Copy one line at a time.

sudo mount -o remount,rw /dev/disk0s3 /
cd ~
mkdir mnt
sudo mount -t hfs /dev/disk0s2 mnt
hdiutil attach mnt/OS.dmg
sudo cp -R /Volumes/OSBoot\ 1/System/Library/CoreServices/AppleFileServer.app /System/Library/CoreServices
hdiutil detach /Volumes/OSBoot\ 1/
sudo umount mnt
rmdir mnt
sudo mount -o remount,ro /dev/disk0s3 /

I’m now able to Connect.

FYI: Patchstick has to be done on Tiger but I pulled AppleFileServer.app from my Leopard and AFP/SSH from Leopard fine

Good to know on the AppleFileServer working from Leopard.

When you update from a pre-youtube, it just updates your current setup. your 'restore' image is still the factory 1.0 (good for those who want to hack). If you have a 1.1 restore image, "AppleFileServer", along with mount_afp and a number of other handy goodies for those who want to make more of their AppleTV are 'missing'. Sometimes if you are lucky you can use 10.4.9 combo update files to restore this functionality.

I agree the Siglo IV is a fine fine cigar. I really enjoy myself some Siglo II's (I prefer Petit Coronas or something very similar in size, although a nice Robusto can have me buzzing for a good while if I so desire. Have you had any of the Maduro 5 series yet? I'm still not 'up to snuff' on those. My buddy loves them, though.

I have not. What I really would like to get a hold of is some Partagas 898 varnished. Amazing stuff but I no longer seem to have a couple hours of dedicated time.

So I am guessing that the AppleFileServer.app is being copied from the restore image in those command lines. I thought it was from my mac. But it would seem easy enough to just copy from the mac rather than the restore. Actually, the patchstick should be updated to include any files along with ssh. Thanks for the info.
