can i copy the iMovie 10.1.2(on high sierra) app from my wifes MacBook to my 2009 Mac Pro as i have the 08 version of iMovie and it has the black screen problem so is unuseable, the app was installed when i bought the computer 10 years ago and i can't upgrade to the newest version from the App Store as my mac can't be upgraded past high sierra due to not having a compatible video card, thanks

Simple to test. Rename old version and copy new version.

Highly unlikely it will work. 11 version likely requires system features that did not exist in high sierra.

If your Mac Pro is on High Sierra, then it probably would work. Give a try. Just drag and drop from your wife's Mac onto a USB stick/ext drive and then onto your Mac Pro. It's a completely different application to iMovie 08 so when you drag and drop it onto your Mac Pro, it will install as a separate app.
