I currently have a 2014 mac mini dual core with 500GB of HD that I use a media machine. Basically it's plugged via HDMI into my yamaha receiver then from there it goes to my 60" 4k. It works great.
I was a job where I had unlimited dropbox usage but now I've switched companies and I don't have anything. I've been thinking about getting a NAS like the WD mycloud ex2 but I don't know what the performance is like of a NAS. What it can and can't do really. So I've thought that since I have a dual core mac mini sitting there that I could just use that as a server. Really it wouldn't get used all that much but I like the idea of having something a little more future proof.
I'm a pilot and I'm always on the road traveling, currently in Puerto Rico, and when I work on my laptop I'd like to have a place to save all y info that's safe in the event something happens to my laptop. I'd also like to be able to save photos/videos there as well. My laptop is a Razerblade which is windows based and my phone is an iphone.
Is there a way to setup my mac mini to be a server so even if not on the home network I can sync a setup folder like I could on dropbox? What software would I need or do you have a guide to point me to? First goal is just to get syncing so that there's a permanent place for storage of my important files.
I'm looking at getting this and running in raid 1

Also is it possible to create and have folders on the server that I can access anytime I have internet connection but not be required to hose the files on all computers? For instance if I have a 500GB drive in my laptop but a 4TB dual setup can I keep files on it to pull to my laptop as wanted and not have to fill up this hard drive? I really don't have that much but was curious.
thank you for any help!
