I have a mac mini with latest Mountain Lion installed, I have an external hard drive that I originally formatted as journaled encryped, can I remove the encyption without wiping the drive? If I right click on the drive there is an option to decrypt the drive so can I select this without loosing anything?

If you don't have a backup, you're risking losing your files every time you access the drive.
I would never perform ANY major operation on a disk without a backup.
Once you have a backup, you can press the button and find out with no fear.

Did I mention you should have a backup?

You should be able to remove the encryption without needing to wiping the drive or losing anything.

Sorry to bump this old post, but I'm in the same boat as you. I ran into trouble with Mavericks and Migration Assistant with an encrypted backup that I suspect might be causing an issue since it can't see the files (Finder can, but not Migration Assistant). Did the drive decrypt just fine? I'm making a backup of some of the stuff in the drive anyway as a precaution but was curious to see if it decrypted properly for you. Thanks.
