Can I delete diagnostic log messages ?

I have just run Coriolis iDefrag and it stopped halfway through and said :

"There was a problem accessing your volume (e.g bad block) The file iDefrag was working on was :
/private/var/log/DiagnosticMessages/2013.08.13.asl
"

I ran drive verify from disk utility and it said drive ok.

1) Is there a way to detect and correct bad blocks?

2) Can I just delete this file or will that cause problems?

You can delete the log file without issue, but normally you don't need to defrag OS X.

Do a command-r boot to recovery and run Disk Util from there and have it do a repair disk to see what that finds.

Discovered the issue. The HD was dying. I ran iDefrag because I was getting tonnes of beachballing and system hangs and thought some optimisation might help. Turns out the drive was nearly dead, the applestore confirmed it.

Having it replaced on applecare tomorrow when they get the drive in stock
