Using my computer as my media hub... Is it possible to use home sharing to stream my itunes library to an iphone/ipad thats in a dock connected to my stereo system, while controling it with a seperate iphone/ipad? Can this be done? Im trying to use my exsisting equipment, and was hoping something like this would work... If Home sharing in itunes wont do it, are there any apps that can do this? Thanks.

Yes, but you won't be able to control it with another iPad/iPhone (to my knowledge). Now, if you got an Apple TV you could stream your entire iTunes library to where ever you hook it up to and control that from an iPad/iPhone.

An Apple TV or Airport Express would really make this much easier.

I'm not sure how you could do that with the equipment that you have. Maybe someone else does.

No, what you are asking is called airport. You would need an airport device (Apple TV, airport express, etc.) and then you can use the remote app on ipad/ipod/iphone to control the airport device. AFAIK you cannot stream to an ipad/ipod/iphone and remotely control it. You can stream from you itunes library to the device but only control from the device itself.

Humm... OK thanks for the replies. Looks like Ill have to break down and buy some additional components. Let me change the question then. My goal is to wifi stream my itunes library from the office to my theater system in the oppisite end of the house, and then have iphone/ipad control over functions (change track, volume, etc.) so I can listen on my outdoor speakers and control things without having to come back into the house. Any tips here? Also I am currently using a windows pc, with the possibility of switching to a mac soon. Any thought for both potential setups would be great. Thanks.

That's easily done with the Apple TV2. Or if you don't need video you can do that with the Airport Express. Home Sharing will send video and audio to the Apple TV which is connected to your home theater system. You can control everything using your iPhone/iPad using Apple's free remote app from the App Store.

In fact, you can just send music and videos straight from your iPhone or iPad using Airplay and skip the need for a computer and itunes entirely.

As long as your pushing your content to either an Apple TV or Airport Express, this should work very well for you.

You can control your iTunes library from the iPad or iPhone and set it's output to the Apple TV or Airport Express directly from the iOS device.

I often do the same thing with my iPad and Apple TV. I set iTunes output to both the Apple TV and my computer sound system and then use my iPad as a remote to control playback.

Works great and takes only minutes to get everything set up out of the box.
