I have an 8+. I can't do the XS Max or the XS - had to return the Max due to headaches.

I took my son in yesterday to get a phone and I just WANT a new phone. I don't need one, and I know I don't need one, but I really love getting new Apple gadgets and I can't help it. ;-p

I have also realized, that after years of having a plus sized phone, I'm liking the feel of the XS in my hand. Since I can't go that route, I was thinking I might really like the slightly smaller size of the Xr.

Anyway, I'm trying to decide if not having the dual lens on the Xr is gonna be an issue for me. I do take a lot of pics with my phone, but almost always just of my grandkids. I like portrait mode, but honestly, I have no clue if I have ever even used my zoom.

So can someone just tell me what I can do with my 8+ that I will NOT be able to do if I get an Xr?

Notch.

If you haven’t used Portrait mode or zoom on the 8 Plus, I’d say it’s a pretty safe bet you’re not going to notice any difference in what the XR camera will deliver. I’d say go for it.

Yeah I do realize there is a notch. Does that affect the camera/photos?

Well I use portrait mode a good bit actually, but I don't really ever utilize a bunch of other features or anything. I'm pretty basic I guess.

It will still have that, we just won’t really know until we get some real world camera samples whether it handles it as well as the XS does. Can’t imagine it being any worse than the 8 Plus though.

The Xr does do portrait photos, it’s done via software rather than a second lens. It can’t do optical zoom though.

Simplified:
On the rear camera

XR you gain the new version of the wide angle lens that gives you better low light photos, faster focus, much better HDR as well as smart HDR.

Plus gives you 2x true zoom with telephoto lens.

Portrait modes and brokah have been covered.

You get headaches due to the PWM on the OLED displays?

Yes. It appears that way. I mean I have had almost every iPhone since the 3G, and within a few hours of using my Max I had a headache and my eyes were bothering me. I adjusted the brightness, True Tone, etc., but nothing helped. If I looked away for a bit it would subside, but when I’d use the phone again, it would come back pretty quickly. I wound up returning it. :(
