Can i go back from maverics to mou. lion?

Im on mountain lion right now,so if i make a back up with time mashine or some other back up manager and if i update to maverics and start having some problems with a new os can i go back to original factory state of lion?

I made a bootable clone with CC Cloner and installed Mavericks on it. Then I still had ML until I was able to try it out. I'm still on ML because I couldn't get my VM to work right.

Im not too much into it,so basicly you have 2 different partition and one you have ML And on another maverics?
