This is my first post. I have been reading MacRumors for along time but just got around to the forum. I hope this is the right forum.

I just setup a 4tb lacie ethernet disk and whenever I access files from my mac thats running xp there are duplicate files of everything starting with ._ Is there anyway to hide or delete these files without doing it one at a time.

If I understand it right this is happening because my macs are accessing the LaCie through smb instead of afp, which I believe is my only option.

Thanks

Download TinkerTool and use it to configure the system to not create the .DS_Store and other "hidden" files. You should also get your Windows Machine to just Hide Hidden and System files and they should no longer be visable.

It's happening because that's how Macs store what used to be referred to as the "resource fork" on network volumes. I'd suggest not deleting them. However, they are marked "hidden" as default, so if you have Windows set to hide hidden files and folders, they won't appear.

Thanks guys,

I have "do not show hidden files and folders" under folder options on the view tab but they are still showing up. Is there something else I need to do to hide them?

Sorry I am Windows Illiterate.

Thanks

There are many .hidden folders and files in OS X that dont automatically hide in windows. And stupid microsoft doesnt give you the ability to manually hide files that start with . since it probably thinks its an invalid file type

theres no way to hide these files in windows, youll just have to deal with them

Well, that's a different issue. However, resource forks (._whatever files) and .DS_Store files are marked "hidden" by default, and will not appear if you have Windows set to hide hidden files and folders.

Exactly. But there are settings to prevent them from being created, you can do it in terminal, but I just use TinkerTool to do all these things.
