can I hold option and update instead of option and restore to jailbreak??

is it possible to hold option (shift in windows) and press update in iTunes to update to custom firmware without iTunes deleting everything like it does when u click restore??

Doesn't matter what the buttons say (update or restore) when iTunes installs new firmware, it overwrites the old firmware. If you are specifically speaking about selecting a custom restore IPSW made with PT, all your old stuff will be written over by the new firmware.

I wouldn't recommend updating. Problems can occur, and if you update from an already Jailbroken device you can end up with 2 system parititons, losing you a noticable amount of storage.

Really, I figured the new Firmware package would just overwrite the previous firmware. It will actually create a 2nd OS on the phone, am I understanding this correctly ??

I realize it overwrites the firmware but i meant in regards to the restore feature erasing songs, videos and such (factory settings). The "UPDATE" feature on my ipod classic keeps all songs, pics and everything else in tact when it UPDATES the firmware so i meant if the shift + UPDATE feature on the iphone will still allow me to choose my custom firmware but update it AND leave all settings in tact??

I read that itunes doesn't back up songs and music from restore. I'll just UPDATE with a custom firmware and see what happens...

I'm not sure, maybe this was fixed in 3.0, but what sued to happen was if you were Jailbroken and updated to a Jailbroken IPSW, you'd loose about 600mb sotrage and couldn't get it back until you restored. I don't think it had two OSs, but I'm pretty sure it had 3 partitions, as opposed to 2 (/ and /var).

I just used something like AptBackup, synced with iTunes, restored to new IPSW, resycned my stuff and restored all my apps and Jailbreak apps/tweaks.

Well all your music, addresses, movies, etc all come back with a sync, I'm sure you know that

While it is true that if you choose set up as new phone, you loose all your settings, if you choose restore to backup, you open yourself up to all sorts or what I call gremlins that follow you into your new jailbreak.

I choose restore to backup once and regretted it, had to reJB and start over, so I recommend always set up as new phone.

Just about everyone else also recommends it as you are asking for problems like excessive battery drain for one.

As stated, whether the button you see says restore or update, iTunes is gonna write the new software over the old software, no difference there.

The choice is new or keep your settings.
