i am looking at ram upgrade options as i am about to dive in and purchase the 27" quad core imac.

i know we need to install in pairs but do the 'pairs' need to match. can i leave the 2mb pair that comes with the computer AND add a pair of 4mb giving a total of 12mb?

i read one site that said it was possible but would like some verification... does anyone know the answer? i did try to search these forums but didnt quite find what i was looking for.

Adding an extra 4 gigs -- to bring you to 8 gigs -- is about $110.

Adding an extra 8 gigs -- to bring you to 12 gigs -- is about $350

Unless you *really* need the 12 gigs, 8 gigs is far more economical.

That is a good point. i was just thinking ahead (hating to waste the 2's if i added the 4's down the road) but i guess i really dont need the 12.

also im sorry, i know it is gigabytes. i just made a tired mistake. long day at work!
thanks for your help
