hello, i'm considering getting a mac mini with mac os x server for webdevelopment and testing in small enterprise. we will be sharing some files via ftp and hosting some webpages for previewing to our costumers as well as many other services the mac os x server provides.

my question is: can i install regular software, specially dreamweaver and development software in this operative system so i can use it as well as the development computer? i'm trying to find something on the web about that but i don't find anything in concrete.

Yes you can - SL Server is nothing more than Snow Leopard with an additional package installed that has all the OD, Server Admin stuff

I know this can be done on Windows Server OS's.

I don't see how it would be any different, but I've never tested it.

It sounds very much like Mac OS X Server is not the right solution for you. If that is all you are doing with it then it sounds like a huge waste of money.

well, the point is that we need another mac for running dreamweaver. we also need a solution to work as a webserver and ftp file server along a NAS system to be acessible by all costumers and collaborators in our enterprise.

Using a pc or linux is not an option because we would have to buy a new license of adobe creative suite for a PC, we already have 1 license ready for a another mac, because our old mac mini failed on the logic board, plus the processor is very old.

So my options: Buy a mac mini without osx server and save 300$. and buy a linux machine to use as a server with the nas, or use the nas in the mac os x server with mac mini, but honestly money is not a problem. i want a solution that's stable and not linux based at the same time, and i don't believe mac os x normal is good enough for virtualizing the different web hostings.

So if you could formulate a better opinion on this matter i would appreciate. Consider that money is not an issue here, focus on the funcionality of using MAC OS X Server vs MAC OS X no server version.

You don't need snow leopard server - regular old Snow Leopard will do FTP and web services. Setting up SL Server is a pain in the ass and you won't even be using any parts of it.

so you recommend using the regular snow leopard since i will be using only for http and ftp server. Is it going to be a pain to configure some sort of NAS system to use with firewire for the main webhosting and ftp sharing? i guess i will have to go with the same trouble as with the mac os x server to configure the http.conf file right?

I'm using 8 SL servers and a Leopard server and I found no difficulty in setting them up. Just make sure DNS works before you do it.
