can someone please help me. i feel like a total n00b asking this coz i had an iphone 3G and always knew this sorta stuff about this but i lost my phone so i have been out of the loop for a good few weeks.

insurance has now paid out and now is the time for me to buy myself a new 3GS.

my question is, will i be able to jailbreak it?

yes, i do know that the software to jailbreak 3.1 isnt out yet for windows but if i am lucky in buying a phone with 3.0.1 on it, can i jailbreak it? what with all of the info going round about how apple now signs the firmware (or something like that) im now not sure if i can jailbreak a 3GS right now (right now being this moment in time where you can no longer restore to old firmwares).

Thanks for the help guys.

EDIT: i jailbroke, unlocked and all sorts my 3G so i know how to do all of this, im just inquiring if its possible on a phone that i will be buying.

thanks for that TSX.

but whats all this i hear about trying to get/save your ECID and SHSH. is this something to do with the ability to jailbreak your iphone in the future???

Nutshell:

Apple has stopped authenticating the 3.0FW which means that if you ever have to restore you can only restore to 3.1.

The Save ECID was a way of allowing users (only those who saved those files in time) to restore back to 3.0, and then JB. It does not mean that those of us who saved the files can JB 3.1, we can only restore to 3.0 and JB that.

right ok, gotchya.

so basically if i can buy a 3.0.1 iphone and then jailbreak from there, will i always be able to keep the jailbreak aslong as i dont use official firmware???

what happens when a new version comes out. how would i update it and then jailbreak that??

yes you can keep your jb at 3.0.1.

just dont be a dumbass and update the latest and greatest firmware once its released without knowing whether a jb is out for it yet. hold your temptation for the newest firmware...there will always be bugs..always wait for problems to be reported first.
