Can I just upgrade the firmware on an Unlocked iPhone without bricking it?

My sister has a 1.0.1 firmware on the iphone 2G.

I want to upgrade her to 3.0.1
What is the best way to do that?

Should I just do a restore on my itunes? and then go through QuickPwn and do everything normally?

Yes plug it into itunes and let it upgrade.

Then you can jailbreak / unlock with RedSn0w (QuickPwn is out of date now). Use the tutorial on iClarified.com:

Yeah, I think were it a later firmware than that, it would even stay unlocked, but in this case you'll have to unlock it again. Very worse thing that can happen is that you'd have to DFU it to unlock it (not at all hard, and it's how Redsn0w works now anyway).

btw. whats the best way to back up my mom's contacts once i restore and re-jail break?
she doesn't want to have to input them again?

Back up the phone with iTunes before you start. Right click on the phone in the left-hand menu.

You can restore from the backup once RedSn0w is done.
