Hello,

I have a 27inch iMac 2019 coming soon. I’m trying to find out if I can mix ram stick sizes. I ordered the base 8gb and want to know if I can add 2 sticks of 16GB to total 40gb total? This is assuming I match the memory speed etc.

does anyone know I can’t find any info atm.

Adding a pair of RAM sticks to your iMac? As long as the specs are correct, should be no problem.
No, RAM capacity does not have to match the existing pair.

As with any other computer. Mixing RAM has the potential of not working, working at lower than advertised speeds, breaking dual channel and so forth. Although it is pretty minimal if you get the same manufacturer, speed and timings as is currently in there. As Apple's RAM will follow JEDEC standards not something using XMP profiles (overclocked). Like people normally use in DIY computers. Which I think is where most of the reported problems come from when people mix RAM. I've never had issues using Crucial's memory configurator or OWC RAM.

If you want to be extra cautious. Pull out a module and see who it is made by. Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron (Crucial) or Toshiba are common manufacturers for OEM computers. Although I don't think Toshiba manufacturers DRAM anymore.

At any rate. Since all these RAM will follow JEDEC standards. I don't think any will be an issue.

I had a 27" 2017 iMac last year, which I upgraded from 8GB to 40GB by adding two 16GB DDR4 modules. The iMac was so much faster! OWC has a pretty helpful site and tells you everything you need to know.

Brilliant thank you. I guess I have nothing to loose I’m getting 32gb anyway so if I can get the existing 8gb to work with it, it would be a bonus.

Hey, I just ordered a new 27" iMac and and wondering the exact same thing. Did you add the 32GB of RAM to your existing 8 and is it running okay? Any issues?

Probably a good idea to read this post - it has some good advice.
