I just exchanged my BlackBerry Q10 with an iPhone 4S 16GB in mint condition. Unfortunately, the guy who sold it to me was like "oh and I already upgraded it to the latest OS" and I'm like "**** me! What a muppet!"

So I've searched online for ways to downgrade to iOS 7.1.2 but it seems like Apple has stopped signing that OS or whatever that means and when I tried to downgrade I got some error:

Error 3194, Error 17, or "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"

Is there really no way to downgrade? From what I've read online that the iPhone 4S only partially supports iOS 8 (whatever that means) so why cant I downgrade? I hate Apple for this forcing users to use the OS they want

No. There is no way.

If there was, my iPhone 5 running 7.1.2 would be back on iOS 6. But there isn't. You're stuck.

Can't someone who has an iPhone 4S and iOS 6 or 7 send me their blobs to enable me to downgrade?

Blobs do not work, and when they did they were not interchangeable between 2 different iPhones of the same model. There is no way for you to downgrade.

The more you know about blobs…the more confident you become that they don't work anymore.

This is the number one reason I won't be buying iphone anymore. :(
unfortunately, I can't say the same, tried every phone out there, was a BlackBerry fanboy for 6 years, until recently, with the BB OS 10, my contacts start disappearing randomly for both me and my wife.

Then I loved the fact that I can simply edit my contacts online on iCloud and have the changes reflect instantly. Heck, even my 2 year old iCloud account still has those contacts and never lost a single one. That is vital to me and my wife.

Apps is another world, there's simply no comparison. so I have to stick to Apple, but this is not fair!

I mean, I understand if they force new phones to upgrade. But why the heck would they allow a 3 year old iPhone 4S to upgrade in the first place and cripple the device? Right, if they want to do that out of goodwill so they won't feel left out, great, but then give em the choice to go back if they don't like it!!

it's like they're forcing me to upgrade to a device which can properly handle their latest OS! I am so pissed

This. Right there is why.

Apple is always driving to the next big thing and pushing the user along with them.

Yep, one time I had to buy a new computer because of an iPhone.

(The story goes: got a new iPhone, couldn't activate phone, iTunes outdated, couldn't install newer iTunes, OS outdated, couldn't install newer OS, computer too outdated... I mean, it was actually time for me to upgrade the computer, but still.)

Totally get that. My iPhone 5 has NEVER synced with my 17" PowerBook G4 because the PowerBook is too old. Apple easily could have continued to support PowerPC with iTunes 10.6.7 and up (it was more work to stop supporting us), but they deliberately chose to cut us off at that version.

And the guys running the 4 and 4s with PowerPC Macs got really screwed when they installed iOS 7, because iOS 7 required iTunes 10.6.7 and up, which can't be run on a PowerPC Mac.

Granted, Apple considered my PowerBook too old in 2004, but still. I don't own a single Intel Mac so any syncing I have to do is done on the MP at work or a PC.

One of the reasons my iPhone is jailbroken, so I can work around all that crap.

It is possible on every device released BEFORE the iPhone 4s, iPad 2 and iPod touch 5, but since it's a hardware exploit it's tethered :apple:
