Can I record a live streaming game off of cbs.com to my imac while I'm gone?

Alabama plays Arkansas today and www.cbs.com is going to stream it live at their website. The game is at 2:30 p.m. central standard time. I'm not going to be here to watch the game and I no longer have satellite. We dumped it.

Is there any way for me to record it from the live stream while I'm gone?

Any programs out there anyone know about or anything already on the mac that'll do it.

I'm a newbie mac owner and know little about what all it can do...and what programs allow for what on it.

By the way...as a new owner I'm loving mine. Been on Windows for years and finally had enough. Now I'm reading in this forum about the problems people are having but so far so good with mine. I got the Apple care 3 year deal and said...no worries.

Well, this is not the cheapest solution, but it's the best. Check out Elgato's EyeTV HD - http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/EyeTV-HD/product1.en.html .

Hook this up to an HD cable box and then plug into your iMac via USB. The included software is excellent and allows you to watch, record and edit HD cable TV. I've been using Elgato products for years, but this one is awesome on my 27" iMac. I record all New England Patriots games every Sunday and it's also great to be using your iMac while also having a live cable TV window open on screen. It's absolutely worth the price, but you'll need a cable outlet near your computer as well as an extra HD cable box from your cable company (probably an extra $5 a month). If you're ok with that, I'd highly recommend this.

Hey thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I don't even have cable either. We just basically shut the TV down to spend time with family and to save the money.

Then one day, however, my father-in-law comes over and couldn't stand that we didn't have television so he rigged it up so that we are getting the free channels.

Bought one of those little boxes to receive the digital signal from Radio Shack and it's never worked right. We get black and white tv basically. So I watch games and such online if I get a chance and since I wasn't going to be able to see that Bama/Arkansas game I was hoping to record it and watch it when I got home. It didn't happen. Oh well. Thanks for the tip though.

No problem. I suppose you could have done a screen record in Quicktime X (assuming you're running Snow Leopard) while the Safari window was open and streaming the game. I'm not sure how long screen records are limited to though, but I'd look into that next time you're in a similar situation. Or just get cable and an EyeTV HD so you can record games. You can even stream it live to an iPhone when you're on the go!

There's various programs out there capable of grabbing a region of your screen and recording anything that happens within that region. Get one of those, position the CBS.com player within that space and then click record as close to when you have to leave as possible on game day (maybe one of them can work with a timer setting to grab just during game hours?).

You'll need lots of hard drive space to record a whole game. I'm not aware of any that can compress the capture on the fly, so they usually yield a big file on the capture, which can then be processed down to a small file after the capture is complete.

I've used various incarnations of these in the past- but not for this particular kind of application. A couple of good ones I've used:
