can I restore an iPhone from an iPad backup

Can I restore an iPhone from an iPad backup that was created with iTunes?
I have an old iPad mini that will be given away and backup was created.
However, I don't think I will purchase an iPad anytime in the future. However,
I will probably buy an iPhone.
Will I be able to restore an iPhone from iPad backup? Anything I will lose?
