I have just moved to a part of the UK not covered by my ISP and have had to terminate my contract, which means that I lose my ntlworld email facility. I would like to replace it with Outlook but have no idea how to do this. Can some-one point me in the right direction, please? Best way to begin? I am not very familiar with the mechanics of email, so simplicity would be appreciated. Has anyone had experience of Absolute-email, by the way? They offer a very reasonably priced package, but I can't find much about them?

A simple Google search for 'Outlook Mac' reveals that yes, you can run Outlook on your Mac.
You could also just use the built in Mac Mail app and add you account on there, it's a really simple to use email client and it's built right in (Outlook is a paid application)

There's also no real reason to get a paid email address these days. Apple offers a @icloud.com mail or you could use @outlook.com, @gmail.com @ yahoo.com etc.

The Outlook app for personal use is overkill and frankly it isn't that great a product. It's also had occasions where it doesn't play nice with some email accounts.

Heindijs is quite right - there are a number of free email accounts available out there right now (I have @icloud.com, @gmail.com, @outlook.com) accounts, and the free Mac Mail app works with all three just fine. Further, it works with the Mac's Contacts list (where you can set up individuals or Groups) seamlessly. And that also shows up on your iPhone / iPad's Mail and Contacts, too. No need to reinvent the wheel.

There are other email apps out there, too - personal preference and what you need from them the question, I guess - but that's all secondary to setting up a (free) email account you are happy with.
