Can I send email from another address in mail?

With gmail I am able to send email from another address ie a yahoo or a work email address. Does mobileme mail allow me to do this? I have had a look at the preference settings and it doesn't appear that you can. Does anybody know otherwise? I would like to have mail forwarded to mobileme mail and then be able to respond using the address from the account that is forwarded.

I'm doing this currrently with mobile me. The web interface does NOT allow you to do this. But on the iphone, that I did is I simply added an additional SMTP server, then disabled the Mobile me SMTP server. This way when I send from the iphone it looks like its coming from my gmail address.

On my Mac, I use mail.app to check the emails. In there, you can set up aliases very easily.
Go to preferences, Accounts, Mobileme, account information.

Then in the email address field you list all your email address aliases separated by commas. ex:
somedude@me.com, somedude@gmail.com, somedude@yahoo.com

When you write an email you can select from any one of those addresses then.

So basically, I never use the web-interface for anything.

It is a pity that it does not allow the sending of emails from other addresses as gmail does via the settings. It would prove very useful. I wonder if apple will add this facility in the future.

You and everybody else. I know many people, including myself, who won't be upgrading from their trial account unless they allow this feature.

Gmail is useless in this regard also. Their web interface lets you send emails from another email address, but the recipients will see

Which looks terrible and unprofessional.

I suppose it is a matter of choice. I had to go looking for the information that disclosed that an email sent from gmail using another address was in fact sent via gmail.

Not a matter of choice, its a matter of email client.

On outlook 2007 and newer clients (the vast majority of business users) the Gmail "on behalf of" message appears right there in the from field. On other email clients this is not the case.

Yahoo however can send "as" multiple email addresses and not have this issue. Very annoying.

From mail.app in Mac OS this is a trifling job and its good in this regard that it gives you a drop down list from which you can select your SMTP Server!

And also agreed that GMail's 'other domain' feature is completely use less!

Strange, I just did this using gmail's web interface, and it didn't do anything like that. The "from" address was as expected, and replying to the message used the correct (non-gmail) address. The only hint that a different address was used, aside from the "Received" headers, was that the "Sender:" header contained my gmail address.

However, I did explicitly enable google's "Send mail as" feature (in gmail's web interface, look under "Settings/Accounts"). See google's help for more details: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&ctx=mail&answer=22370

Heh, I just read the gmail help docs. It appears that the above can happen. It's not a gmail problem -- it's outlook that's screwing you over. From the gmail docs (italics are mine):

Note: when you're sending with a different 'From:' address, your Gmail address will still be included in your email header's sender field, to help prevent your mail from being marked as spam. Most email clients don't display the sender field, though some versions of Microsoft Outlook may display "From yourusername@gmail.com on behalf of customaddress@mydomain.com." ​

So, people with regular mail programs won't see anything different.

Maybe it's a MobileMe thing (which I don't use), but I send mail with a different from address. One of my personal e-mail addresses is a permanent address from my alma mater, so I just use my ISP e-mail as a shell. All of my e-mails look to be from my permanent address, and when I send from the iPhone, it looks the same.

I had to set it up in Mail on my iBook, though, because when I tried (using the same settings) it wouldn't work on the iPhone. But once I used Mail and then told iTunes to bring that setting over, it worked perfectly.

I understand that technically this is not a gmail issue, but gmail is the Only provider who uses the sender field like this. Yahoo and others use the from field.

Also, since Outlook is the defacto standard in business the fact that google is doing things "right" doesn't help me.
