I recently bought a 27” late 2009 iMac for dirt cheap on Craigslist. Today I am swapping out the 1TB HDD for a 500gb SSD (Crucial MX500), which will serve as the main drive, per the OWC/iFixit instructions.

The previous owner swapped out the optical drive for a SSD, but the SSD later failed (which I knew when buying it). I haven’t decided what to do with the optical bay. When I go in to swap the main drive, would there be any problem with simply unplugging (and leaving unplugged) the old failed and unusable drive in the optical bay? This is so I stop getting an occasional message about an issue with the drive. (I have need for neither the optical drive nor a second hard drive.) I also don’t want to have my system drive in the optical bay enclosure, as the previous owner did. Perhaps it’s superstitious of me, but I don’t trust it!

If not, I’ll probably either throw in an old 650gb 2.5” HDD or put the optical drive back in, just to shut it up.

Should be okay to remove it. As long as the temperature sensor is still plugged in to the machine, should be no issues.
