Can I stream movies using Quicktime

I am kind of new to all of this I cannot find an answer anywhere. I have all my movies ripped to an external harddrive. I just got an ATV2 and I wanted to see if there was anyway I can use quicktime or another player to stream my movies to my TV. I would rather not have to import all my movies into iTunes if I can help it.

The un-jailbroken ATV2 can only stream from a computer running iTunes.
A jailbroken ATV can use 3rd party add-ons like Plex or XBMC and stream from most network accessible folders including NAS.

so i have to import a movie into iTunes if I want to see it, thats ridicules.
