I will be buying iPhone over the next few days and I have a question. Can I unlock to use it on a Brazilian GSM carrier or can I downgrade the baseband and unlock it then? If so, links to step-by-step guide would be apreciated.

Thanks.

You can downgrade to 1.1.1 and unlock :)
No, you can't if it is 1.1.2 OOB. You can downgrade and jailbreak but not downgrade and unlock as the baseband has changed and is currently unlockable. The only option is Turbo Sim which a few people have reported success with, but it involves modifying your iPhone SIM which could make getting any warranty repairs pretty difficult (as it's obvious you've modded the phone)
