Well, I lost my iPhone 4 and dug up my old 3GS... Lone and behold, it's jailbroken with Cydia 1.1.6 running IOS 5.1.1...

It's been so long, I can't remember if there's a special method to upgrading the IOS and I don't want to lose my jailbreak/unlock. Can I just click the Install Now button in my General settings?

If you do general install, you will lose your jailbreak. I don't think you have a choice but to actually update it and then jailbreaking it again.

I can't do that...

Why not? The lime rain exploit applies to the 3GS. You can do a tethered jailbreak 6.1.3 with RedSnow on 6.1.3.

EDIT: The unlock is the issue isn't it? By this time you can probably get your phone factory unlocked very easily.

You're probably right... No, you ARE right. I'm going to send someone down to the Apple Store with my phone.

Actually if you have a friend with a phone on an AT&T contract, just have them call AT&T and tell AT&T that it's an old phone your friend would like unlocked. He will give them the IMEI number, and then AT&T will unlock it a short time later. Then all you have to do is restore the phone and BOOM. AT&T handles the unlocks on their phone, not Apple.

Then it needs to be a AT&T phone...
Also no need to restore after an IMEI unlock

All 3GS'es(at least in the US) are AT&T. The iPhone wasn't opened to other carriers until the iPhone 4. Really? Mine didn't get actually unlocked until I restored. Mine is an iPhone 4 though.

Can I update my jailbroken 3Gs?

Just needs to be deactivated, or put in a different SIM

'The iPhone 3GS was made available for pre-order on June 7, 2009 and released on June 20 in Canada, the United States, and 7 European countries, and on June 26 in Australia and the United Kingdom. Within the first weekend of its release, over one million iPhone 3GSs were sold, and August 2010 saw the release of the iPhone 3G incompatible slate.'
