ive been told only models after 2009 are capable of been used as diplays with mac pros, can anyone confirm this or the correct answer

No, only the 2010 27" models can be used with any mini-DisplayPort connection. The 2011 iMacs need a Tunderbolt connection.

so no chance of an adapter for video mirroring from mac pro out to a imac 2006 c2d models?

Nope, no chance. I think there was someone who figured out a way to make it work. I'm pretty sure I remembered seeing the thread, but it was a lot of work and probably not worth it.

Edit: found it but it's for a G5 not intel.

There are no adapters because the iMac's hardware just cannot act as a display. The only way to get the Mac Pro's display on to the iMac is VNC (Google it). It won't work for everything, but it can do somethings.
